Elmer E.(Hal) and Ozelia Haddon - Squaw Bay This 1904 photo shows the Elmer E. Haddon family who homesteaded 160 acres of land above Squaw Bay and the present town of Bayview. Elmer was born in Indiana October 10, 1867; his wife, Ozelia, in Iowa August 31, 1868. Some early recollections indicate that Elmer was called Hal by the local folks. He left home at the age of thirteen and met his future wife in Hartington, Nebraska, where they were married April 18, 1888. Their first child George arrived in 1889 while they were still in Nebraska. The family came to Idaho in 1890 and settled on a 160 acre homestead above Squaw Bay at the southern tip of Lake Pend Oreille. Their next ten children were born at the cabin they built above what became the town of Bayview. These children included Elizabeth Mary, born October 11, 1890; Alverda B., April 2, 1892; Jessie R., December 12, 1893; Anne L., November 10, 1895; David A., November 29, 1897; John C., May 3, 1899; Grace W., November 17, 1900; James R., May 23, 1902; Margaret R., October 24, 1903; and Bert L., August 19, 1904. The family moved to Skagit County, Washington, in 1906. Records show that Martha was born there June 18, 1907 and William followed on January 21, 1909. The 1910 U.S. census lists this entire family as residents of the Fidalgo Precinct. Ozelia passed away in 1919. Elmer died January 4, 1945, at the age of 78 in Skagit, WA., but his name appears on the 1930 Bayview census as a widower, so he must have returned to town for a period of time. A great granddaughter, Jessica Haddon, lives in Bayview today. Her mother and father, Claudia and John Haddon reside in Ellensberg, Washington. John is the son of David A. Haddon, Elmer and Ozelia's 6th child. |
