Bayview and Lakeview and Other Early Settlements on Southern Lake Pend Oreille by Linda Hackbarth If you love history or if you have a connection to Bayview or Lakeview you'll enjoy reading this account of the early development of the many settlements located on the southern end of Lake Pend Oreille in scenic northern Idaho, starting with Pen d'Oreille City founded in 1866 in tiny Buttonhook Bay by the Oregon Steam Navigation Company. The author traces Bayview from 1910 when the Prairie Development Company, a group of Spokane, Washington, entrepreneurs, platted the town site and began selling lots. Soon Daniel C. Corbin extended a branch of his Spokane International Railroad into town and both the Washington Brick and Lime and Portland International Cement Companies were using the rails to carry limestone to Spokane. J. Grier Long built a two-story hotel which attracted visitors and prospective newcomers. Through numerous interviews Ms. Hackbarth gleaned the stories of many of Bayview's early shop owners and residents. The book holds many photos and personal accounts. The fortunes and adventures of early miners marked the pioneer years in Lakeview. Prominent among those hardy folks were the likes of Fred Weber, Simon Donnelly and Archie McDonald. The stampede to Chloride, six miles above Lakeview, in 1890 brought a cascade of gold seekers to the area for a short-lived but exciting few years. Lakeview settled into a typical mining town with its hotels, stores and taverns but its lasting impressions come from the numerous families who built cabins in this remote location. Taped interviews from the 1960s of Caro Lou Bastian, Margaret Chalfont, Leo Payne and George Cervaney, left in the archives at the University of Idaho by Edwin Fulwider, provided much insight into Lakeview's people and events. Other stories tell about the homestead families at Cedar Creek, Granite Creek, Whiskey Rock and various small communities that still exist today on the east shore of Lake Pend Oreille.
